The virgin Mary in her guise as Lady of Guadalupe occupies a central position in Mexican Catholicism. Guadalupe is a sanctuary in Estremadura, Spain, the site of a devotional cult to a dark skinned virgin Mary associated with the reconquest of Spain from Islam.
