The miracle worker, from the church St. Nicholas on the Lipna, Novgorod in 1294, has the distinction of being the first signed and dated example of Russion religious art to survive.

Nicholas was born in a well to do family at Patara in Asia Minor. Emperor Justinian built a church in his honour in 6th Century in Constantinople. Saint Nicholas' final transformation into "Father Christmas" and SANTA CLAUS occured among Protestants.
